The problem
Therapy relied on old devices whose only reward was a sound. The exercises were repetitive, and keeping children engaged through a session was hard.
What I did
- 01Co-built, in a team of 2, an endless car-racing game in Unity with two modes (muscle contraction and relaxation), a skin shop and a leaderboard.
- 02Built the controller software: electrodes feed a biofeedback device, and when the muscle impulse passes a threshold, the car jumps an obstacle.
- 03Coordinated with clinics, doctors and the biofeedback device company, and reported progress to the CEO, the client and upper management.
- 04Trained physiotherapists to use it and iterated on difficulty and mechanics from patient and therapist feedback.
Outcome
2Clinics using it
- Deployed in physiotherapy sessions at 2 cerebral palsy clinics in Belgrade.
What I learned
When the users are children in therapy, accessibility and the patient's perspective decide everything, and the feedback loop has to include doctors, therapists and the hardware company at once.
